THE CATHEDRAL

The Holy Rosary Cathedral is located at 646 Richards Street at the corner of Dunsmuir St.  The entrance in on Dunsmuir St.  The Cathedral is located in the downtown core of the city and is within easy walking distance of most hotels in the downtown area. Click for map 646 Richards St. (at Dunsmuir St.)

For those visitors staying outside the downtown core, the Cathedral is easily accessible by private transport with parking available on the surrounding streets, in a parkade across Richards St., and in several other convenient parking lots nearby.  The area is also well served by public transit.

To aid you in spotting the Cathedral, it is a small building compared to European cathedrals and is built in the traditional style of an early French Gothic cathedral with two steeples of similar design but uneven height.  The Cathedral was built in 1900.

RINGING SCHEDULE

Check our Ringers Diary for updated information

Visitors Note: We strongly encourage visiting ringers to check with the contact below before coming to attend any ringing sessions.  Circumstances sometimes result in cancellation of ringing at short notice

Sunday Service Ringing: 10:30am (or slightly earlier depending on the end of the previous Mass) to 11am, prior to the High Mass which begins at 11am.

Tuesday Quarter Peals:  6:30 to 7:30pm
Quarter Peals are scheduled on Tuesday evenings whenever it is possible to get a band together. Visitors may be included in quarter peal ringing where it can be arranged by prior arrangement.

Tuesday Practices : 7:30 to 9:00pm
Regular weekly practice.  Ringers at all levels participate.  Visitors always welcome

Saturday Practices: 9:00 to 11:00am
Ringers at all levels are welcome to the Saturday practice sessions.  Although the Saturday practice sessions are aimed at beginners, experienced visiting ringers are always welcome.

Special Ringing:  Ringing for weddings and special religious and civic events are frequently scheduled.  Visitors may arrange to be included in these events.

THE BELLS

There are 8 bells in our tower.  Bells 1 to 5 were cast in 1906 by Llewelyn & James at the Castle Green Foundry in Bristol, England.  Bells 6 to 8 were cast in 1900 by the Paccard Foundry in Annecy le Vieux, France.  The tenor is approx. 16 cwt.

ACCESS TO THE TOWER

Access to the tower is by a door on the left side of the vestibule inside the main entrance to the church.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings, the tower door should be unlocked prior to the scheduled ringing sessions and visiting ringers may make their way up the stairs to the ringing chamber.

On Tuesday evenings, the main doors to the Cathedral are locked, however, there should be a ringer at the centre door prior to the practice to let visitors in.  If there is no one at the door or if you arrive after the practice has started, there is a door bell push button that rings a bell in the ringing chamber to let us know that someone is waiting.  The push button is located on the left side of the frame of the east door (left side of the Cathedral when facing the front).

If the bells are ringing, please wait until they stop before pressing the button.  Someone will come to let you in as soon as possible.  If for any reason this system doesn't work, the church office is located around the corner (at 646 Richards St.).  Someone there should be able to assist you.

CONTACTS

When you arrive in Vancouver, we recommend that you contact us to confirm the ringing times or to find out about recently scheduled special ringing such as weddings or special church events.  Cancellations or changes to the Saturday schedule are quite common due to special services in the church or the lack of ringers.  Cancellation of Tuesday practice or Sunday Service sessions are rare but do happen occasionally, so please check.
